Guest Artist: Jihea Hong-Park

BYU Piano department has had the immense pleasure of hosting two guest artists in the past weeks, both of whom are interviewing for positions on piano faculty.

Among them is pianist Jihea Hong-Park, who is currently on evening faculty at The Juilliard School. As part of her interview process, Jihea Hong-Park both presented a recital and hosted a master class (coaching current BYU piano majors). In her master class, she incorporated quotes and concepts from across the arts: an Orwell quote communicated the equivalence (rather, inequivalence) of notes in a phrase from Rachmaninoff’s “Vocalise”, a Japanese lacquer painting captured the nuanced scene inspiring Debussy’s “Poisson d’or”, etc. In addition to providing excellent instruction to the performers, Hong-Park engaged the audience by including cross-generic comparisons.

Attached is her (impressive!) professional bio: Pianist Jihea Hong-Park performs regularly as recitalist, soloist, and chamber musician in cities throughout the United States and abroad. She has been featured at major venues including Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital and Zankel Hall, Alice Tully Hall, Merkin Hall, Steinway Hall, Korea's Incheon Performing Arts Center, Yun I-Sang Concert Hall, Japan’s Komae Ecorma Hall and Niigata Performing Arts Center among others. She has also appeared often as guest artist and lecturer at universities and colleges in Asia, Europe, and the United States. Ms. Hong-Park received her B.M. and M.M. degrees at The Juilliard School. Upon her master's graduation in 2003, she received the school’s highest award, William Schuman Prize for her exceptional achievement, leadership, and service in music. Ms. Hong-Park is currently a doctoral candidate in the Music and Music Education program at Teachers College, Columbia University. She is presently on faculty at The Juilliard School’s Evening Division and the New York Philharmonic Teaching Artists.
